The Bistro at Cafe Junior Cardiff

If you're anything like our little family then the thought of attempting to go out for an evening meal together can be very daunting. You worry that your baby/toddler will create a scene with copious amounts of crying and tantrums. An evening meal for us normally lasts about 45 minutes max as by that point we're desperate to get going as we haven't been able to relax and enjoy the food due to entertaining the toddler. You also have to attend a restaurant with almost a suitcase full of entertainment goodies such as books, pencils, iPad etc.

Cafe junior have come up with a solution to evening family dining by opening up a bistro at their site on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. They appreciate that eating out as a family can be very difficult so they have provided bistro style dining within their facility so therefore your children can have a play in a safe environment before eating and after eating. Not only that they now have an alcohol licence too so you will be able to have a drink with your meal if you wish. They can also cook your children's meals and serve them before yours, if you would like to enjoy your dinner alone.  You can find out more information about the bistro by clicking here, Juniors.

A sample menu can be viewed here, Menu with a 2 course meal priced at £10.95 and 3 courses £13.95. They also have tapas available.

The parent bloggers from Cardiff were invited to try out their new menu. As always I jumped at the offer. If someone mentions food i'm there. Once again I forgot to take pictures of everything which is what I always seem to do when i'm enjoying myself.

We tried a selection of starters, mains and dishes from their tapas range. I enjoyed the tapas range the most and this is probably what I would go for next time we go. I loved the prawn dishes and the mozzarella and tomato.

There was a delicious pizza on offer which is something I would recommend if you see it on their menu and that was goats cheese and caramelised onion. It was a perfect pairing.

The children also got to try out some dishes too such as macaroni and cheese and pizza. The macaroni and cheese was a huge hit with the kids.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic idea for families wanting to dine out without the scrutiny of other diners. Cafe Junior is designed for children under the age of 5 so bare that in mind if you have older children. There wouldn't be anything there for them to play with but for under 5's there are plenty of toys and activities. I found the food very nice and the menu to be reasonably priced. There isn't anything special on the menu but it's a welcome break from cooking at home. If you are trying to go for a romantic meal or date night then this is obviously not the place to go but for a family it is ideal.

What do you think of the idea? Have you been yet?

  1. We've done the Bistro nights before and as you say, it's a great solution for eating out as a family as the kids are entertained and you don't have to worry what the other diners will think!! I was so sorry to have missed the bloggers get-together. Sounds like you all had fun xx
